County Vehicle Rules Every Homeowner Should Know
Prince William County has rules about where and how different types of vehicles can be parked. These rules help keep neighborhoods looking nice and make sure streets stay safe and easy to use. Here’s what homeowners need to know to avoid fines and complaints.
Inoperative Vehicles (IOVs)
An inoperative vehicle is one that:
– Does not have up-to-date license plates or a valid inspection sticker.
– Is broken down or being used for parts.
These vehicles must be stored inside a garage. You cannot keep them in your driveway, carport, or on the street. If you see a broken-down vehicle sitting outside a garage on private property, you can report it to Neighborhood Services by calling 703-792-7018.
If the car is parked dangerously on a public road, call the Prince William County Police Department’s non-emergency number at 703-792-6500.
Commercial Vehicles
Big work vehicles don’t belong in residential neighborhoods. The county does not allow the parking of:
- Cement mixers, garbage trucks, bulldozers, or trailers from big trucks.
- Any commercial truck over 10,100 pounds (like box trucks and flatbeds) on residential streets or properties.

Boats, RVs, and Trailers
If you own a boat, motorhome, or trailer, you may not park it on the street in our community except temporarily for packing or unpacking purposes.
