During recent cold weather, several residents have been observed walking on and sledding onto the water retention pond when it appears to be frozen. While this may look harmless or even fun, it is extremely dangerous and poses a serious risk to life and safety.
Why This Is So Dangerous
Retention ponds are not designed for recreation, and they do not freeze the same way lakes or skating ponds might.
- Ice thickness is unpredictable. Even if parts of the pond look solid, ice can be dangerously thin just a few feet away.
- Moving water weakens ice. Retention ponds often have inflow and outflow areas beneath the surface, preventing uniform freezing.
- Falls can be life-threatening. If someone breaks through the ice, cold-water shock and hypothermia can occur within minutes.
- Rescue is difficult and dangerous. A person falling through the ice puts not only themselves at risk, but also anyone who attempts to help.
Children, pets, and adults are all vulnerable in these conditions, and incidents can escalate quickly with devastating consequences.
What Residents Need to Know
- Walking, sledding, skating, or playing on the pond is not permitted at any time.
- Frozen appearance does NOT mean safe.
- This activity must stop immediately to prevent serious injury or loss of life.
How You Can Help Keep Our Community Safe
- Please talk with your children about why ponds—frozen or not—are off-limits.
- Keep pets leashed and away from the pond edge.
- If you see someone on the pond, encourage them to move to safety.
- Report unsafe activity to the HOA so it can be addressed promptly.
Our Shared Responsibility
We all want our neighborhood to be a safe and welcoming place, especially during winter months. Avoiding the pond when it appears frozen is a simple but critical step we can take to protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbors.
Thank you for your cooperation and for helping keep our community safe.
